Winners of the Campus Food Bank’s 12 Days of Giving food drive were announced mid-July.  We were one of the participating departments and we collected the most food of any department.  Yay us!  This is the sixth time we’ve won the top points prize, and it might not be the same as an Olympic gold medal, but we can be pretty proud of our record of generosity.

We survived the major power outage which affected the campus the weekend of July 6th.  Many thanks go to the department members who coordinated equipment and supply moves/needs during the outage – Craig Skinner, Marie Codner, Donna Jackman, Donna Hunt, Mike Murphy, Barry Walters, Dave Heeley.

Planning continued for the MUN all years’ reunion, Havin’ a time.  All department members were encouraged to participate in some way as we welcome home our alumni.  The Biochemistry event is scheduled for 10 -1 on Friday August 10th.

Simon Lamarre, Research Associate in Dr. Sean Brosnan’s lab, accepted a faculty position at the Universite de Moncton and left us in July. Simon and family also welcomed a new daughter to their home; daughter Rosalie was born on July 9th.  Double congratulations to you, Simon!

Dr. Davis announced that he had recommended the appointment of Dr. Mulligan as Acting Deputy Head (Undergraduate) until December 31, 2012, replacing Dr. Valerie Booth who is on sabbatical. It is anticipated that this recommendation will move quickly through the appropriate channels.

Our advising and general offices were busy with student enquiries as registration for Fall 2012 started in Mid-July.  By the end of the month we had some small waiting lists which will be reviewed for space availability during August.  As always, required courses will be a priority in waitlist reviews.

Planning for our Summer Student Symposium was busy in July as abstracts and posters were being prepared.  The big day is August 17th and a large turnout is hoped for by the organizers.  Graduate students may give talks on their projects, undergraduate students in labs for the summer are invited to prepare posters, and a guest speaker has been invited.  Contact Craig Ayre in the Christian lab if you need information in advance of the event.
