Two graduates of the department have recently had their research efforts rewarded.

Danny Wadden (B.Sc.(Hons), 2011) has been awarded a share of $5,000 from the Janeway Children's Hospital Foundation to investigate the role that appetite and energy regulation gastrointestinal (GI) hormones play in the development of childhood obesity.  Danny is doing this work as part of his M.Sc. research with Dr. Guang Sun in the Faculty of Medicine.  The Faculty of Medicine website has more information about this award and Danny's research.

Dr. René Jacobs is one of the two recipients of this year's ILSI North America Future Leader Award which is given annually to promising new investigators in areas of nutrition and food science and which permits them to conduct novel exploratory research.  René received his PhD from Memorial in 2002.  Since then he has been at the University of Alberta, first as a Postdoctoral Fellow and now as Assistant Professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Nutritional Science.  His research program centres on nutritional and genetic factors that impact the development of obesity, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, and inflammatory bowel disease.
