The 2009 & 2010 Archaeology Field Schools, directed by Amanda Crompton, were held at Signal Hill National Historic Site in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Field School students worked at this renowned historic-period site, to gain practical, hands-on experience in all phases of field excavation and laboratory techniques.

In 2009, excavations were conducted at two sites on Signal Hill. The first site is a nineteenth-century soldier's barracks near Ladies' Lookout, at the summit of Signal Hill. This site was briefly excavated in the 1980s, and revealed the presence of important archaeological deposits. Students expanded on these previous excavations, to learn more about the lives of the soldiers who lived there. They also conducted excavations at the Emberley site, which consisted of recently reported and unknown stone features distributed on the hill. The goal was to determine the date and function of these completely undocumented and previously unknown sites.
