The Foreword welcomes submissions from Memorial faculty, instructors, staff and academic leaders who wish to share ideas, experiences and insights that inform and inspire teaching practice. 

The newsletter is written for Memorial faculty and instructors and features contributions from academic professionals both within and beyond the university.  Contributions may highlight teaching innovations and successes, explore evidence-informed conversations about post-secondary education, or share experiences and perspectives that contribute to a growing community of reflective educators. 

Published articles appear on The Foreword website and are shared through Memorial’s LinkedIn page.

What The Foreword Publishes 

The Foreword features concise, engaging pieces that encourage reflection and dialogue about teaching and learning. Articles connect ideas to Memorial’s teaching context while engaging with broader conversations in post-secondary education, and may showcase innovation, research and evidence-informed practice in the classroom and beyond. 

Possible article formats include: 

• Thought leadership or opinion pieces on timely topics in higher education 
• Reflections on teaching experiences or new approaches 
• Spotlights on research, pedagogical tools or instructional design strategies 
• Interviews or Q&As with educators or researchers 
• Reviews of recent publications or reports relevant to teaching and learning 

Articles are typically up to 750 words and written in a professional but approachable tone. Canadian spelling and punctuation (CP style) and APA citation style are used. 

Writing for The Foreword 

Articles should provide context for the issue, trend or question being explored and explain why it matters. Contributions should draw on relevant research, experience or practice and consider how the ideas connect to Memorial’s teaching environment. Where appropriate, articles should offer practical takeaways, reflective questions or possible next steps for readers. 

Plain language, inclusive and bias-free writing, and short paragraphs that support online readability are encouraged. Links and multimedia, such as photographs or videos, may also be included where appropriate and with permission. 

Submission and Review Process 

Ideas and drafts are accepted on a rolling basis. Each proposal is reviewed for alignment with the purpose and focus of The Foreword, with feedback provided as appropriate. 

Following an invitation to proceed, a draft is requested approximately six weeks before publication. The editorial team works with contributors to refine clarity, tone and accessibility before final approval. Published articles appear on the CITL website and are shared through LinkedIn.
