Published five times a year by the Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning, The Foreword is Memorial University’s teaching and learning newsletter. Intended for faculty, instructors and academic leaders, The Foreword shares ideas, insights and experiences that encourage reflection, conversation and connection across Memorial’s teaching community.  

The Meaning Behind the Name 

Every article  is written with Memorial’s teaching context in mind, grounded in evidence and informed by experience. Article topics range from new pedagogical approaches and classroom innovations to reflective essays and research spotlights with each offering insights to support meaningful, engaged and inclusive teaching and learning. 

Readers of The Foreword can expect thoughtful perspectives on teaching and learning, grounded in research and practice and drawn from voices across Memorial University. Articles offer practical ideas to encourage reflection and experimentation while connecting local experiences with broader conversations in higher education, both nationally and internationally. 

A foreword introduces a book, offering context and perspective before the story begins. The Foreword does something similar for teaching and learning at Memorial University—bringing together ideas, experiences and perspectives that invite readers to reflect, share and explore new possibilities in our teaching practice. 

Sharing with The Foreword 

The Foreword welcomes contributions from faculty, instructors, staff and academic leaders who wish to share their experiences, insights or research related to teaching and learning. Articles are concise, conversational and evidence-informed, with a focus on sharing ideas and experiences that encourage reflection, discussion and the exchange of perspectives across Memorial’s teaching community.

About the Editor

Dr. Ian Gibson is an Instructional Design Specialist at CITL and per-course instructor with the Department of English and Communications and Media Studies. Ian has also taught courses in the English Language and Literature Department at the University of Waterloo and has worked in higher education publishing as a freelance copyeditor for digital coursework. Ian holds a PhD in English Language and Literature from the University of Waterloo.
