Mr. Barnes attended Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic before beginning his architecture studies. He has been a practising architect since 1981 and a real estate developer since 1986. He is currently the owner of a private practice and the principal architect with Glenn Barnes Architecture Inc. He is a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Architects and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

Mr. Barnes is an active community volunteer with such organizations as the Newfoundland and Labrador Business Hall of Fame, the Rotary Club of St. John’s and the Salvation Army. He is chair of the Built Heritage Committee and member of the Urban and Rural Planning Commission, both with the City of St. John’s.
