April 2022: Portraits of Resilience

Determination, hope and hard-won success. That's what we’re going to celebrate at our inaugural leadership conference, Portraits of Resilience, and I hope you join us on June 16.

Throughout history, the strongest leaders have exhibited resilience: the ability to change and transform under pressure, find new solutions and discover innovative ways of being. On June 16, we’ll highlight diverse stories and observations from our guest speakers and panellists.

It will be a day of positivity. It will be a day of power.

Samra Zafar escaped a decade of abuse living as a child bride in Canada. Then, as a single mother working multiple jobs, she went on to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics as a top student. Now she shares her story to empower people and to embolden those who feel defeated to pursue their dreams and independence. Come hear Samra tell her story of finding strength and resilience against all odds, and walk away inspired.

Sheila Watt-Cloutier spent the first decade of her life travelling on the land by dog sled. This experience shaped her world view and inspired her to launch the world’s first international legal action on climate change. Come hear about Sheila's lifelong fight for Inuit cultural and environmental human rights in the wake of climate change, and walk away inspired.

Born to parents who lived with poverty and substance abuse, Liz Murray found herself homeless at the age of 15. Nevertheless, she worked hard to complete high school in just two years and was awarded a full scholarship to Harvard University. Today, she shares her story to advocate for people in need and to inspire motivation in others. Come hear Liz tell her tale of survival and success, and walk away inspired.

In addition, The Honourable Judy Foote, our province’s first woman lieutenant-governor, will open the conference.

Business leader Cathy Bennett will guide a panel that will address the theme of resiliency at the local level with guests Laurabel Mba, Judy White and A Powell.

Young leaders, athletes, musicians and students will join us, adding sparkle, energy and inspiration. It’s going to be an amazing day — a day like no other. I hope you come share it with us.
