Residency Overview

PGY1

  • Modified rotating internship which will allow residents to be adequately prepared for the MCCQE Part II Exam.
  • A pass is essential to continue with this program.
  • Rotations occur at a variety of hospitals throughout St. John’s (Health Sciences Center, St. Clare’s Hospital, Waterford Hospital, Janeway Children’s Hospital)

Rotating year includes:

  • 2 months Surgery (General Surgery, Urology)
  • 2 months Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • 2 months Pediatrics (Neonatology, Pediatrics ER)
  • 2 months Internal Medicine1 months Psychiatry
  • 1 month Adult ER
  • 1 month Selective: Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, Palliative Medicine, Neonatal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology; Ambulatory Clinics, Anesthesia and Research
  • 1 month Elective
  • 1 month Vacation

PGY2

Obstetrics and Gynecology begins

  • 6 months of “teams” (3 teams of general obstetricians and gynecologist)
  • Wards, OR (gyne & elective sections), ER, Clinics
  • 4 months of caseroom - Triage, L&D (vaginal, operative and C/S)
  • 1 month elective/research
  • 1 month vacation

PGY 3 & 4

Primary focus is subspecialty rotations: 

  • Gynecology Oncology
  • REI
  • Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • Urogynecology

Additional rotations include:

  • Endocrinology
  • ICU
  • Electives time available
  • Research time allotted (2 months) for PGY3 - 4
  • 2 research projects from PGY2 – 5
  • 1 month vacation each year

PGY4

  • Community Selective
  • Fredericton, New Brunswick, Corner Brook (elsewhere with program director approval)
  • 3 months focusing in general Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Cost covered (travel, accommodations)

PGY5

  • Chief Resident - This rotation provides consolidated gynaecologic experience at the senior level and includes teaching, mentoring and administative roles.
  • Increasing year of independence in all clinical aspects of Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Prepare for the FRCSC exam
