Resident Protected Time Policy

Our residency program strives to maintain an environment in which academic excellence can be achieved while, at the same time, maximizing clinical exposure and patient care. With this in mind, there are several designated 'protected time' slots in which residents are excused from clinical duties to attend scheduled academic sessions.

Academic Half Day:

  • Friday afternoons 1:00 - 4:00 pm
  • Staff facilitated from September - June
  • Resident facilitated from July - August

Case Rounds:

  • Tuesday mornings 8:00 - 9:00 am
  • Runs throughout the entire calendar year

Grand Rounds:

  • Thursday mornings 8:00 - 9:00 pm
  • Runs during academic calendar year (September - June)

Morbidity and Mortality Rounds:

  • Second Monday of each month 4:30 - 5:30 pm
  • Alternates between Gynecology and Neonatology

Journal Club:

  • Third Thursday of each month from September - June
  • 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Surgical Foundations:

  • Wednesdays 4:30 - 6:00 pm
  • Tuesdays 4:30 - 6:00 pm (practical sessions, schedule varies)

Royal College Exam Study Allowances:

  • PGY5 residents writing the Royal College exam are exempt from on call duties for two blocks (or eight weeks) prior to the written component of the Royal College exam
  • These residents may return to call schedule between the written and oral components of the exam, depending on their spacing in time which can vary yearly
  • Protected time is provided to complete the Making A Mark course - date varies yearly

Research Day:

  • Residents are exempt from clinic duties the entire day (until 5pm)
  • Date varies annually

Residency Retreat:

  • Annual Event - Date varies
  • Residents exempt from clinical duties and Call for the afternoon of the first day (coincides with regular Resident Academic Half Day) until 5 p.m. the following day.
  • Residents who do not attend the retreat are expected to work.
