The Battery - Storms and Avalanches

The Battery’s cliff-side location makes it vulnerable to the yearly storms that visit the shoreline. From strong winds and rough seas to epic snow and rainstorms, The Battery experiences the full brunt of Newfoundland’s weather conditions. Isabella St. John remembers weathering a huge storm in 1975 that swept a building away right before her eyes.

The avalanche of 1959 is another example of why The Battery can be a dangerous community to call your home. Ernest Lucas shares his memory of this February avalanche and how it impacted the people in the community.
