Online Proctoring
Memorial University uses ProctorU, the approved online proctoring service, to supervise invigilated exams in select online courses offered through Brightspace. CITL oversees the administration of this service.
How Online Proctoring Works
Online proctoring allows supervisors to:
- Verify student identity.
- Monitor surroundings during the exam.
- Observe exam activity in real time.
This process mirrors in-person invigilation and helps maintain academic integrity for online exams.
Privacy and Security
Students using ProctorU are subject to ProctorU’s privacy policy and terms of service, both reviewed by Memorial’s Information Access and Privacy (IAP) Office. The IAP Office has also reviewed the contract between ProctorU and Memorial University.
Exam session recordings are securely stored by ProctorU for later review if needed.
Academic Integrity
If a proctor identifies unusual activity, CITL is notified. CITL staff and/or the course instructor may review the session recording as part of their review for academic dishonesty.
As with in-person exams, the final decision on any potential academic dishonesty rests with the instructor.
Am I Eligible to Use ProctorU?
You may use online proctoring (ProctorU) if you meet all of the following conditions:
- Your course offers the option of online proctoring (check your course syllabus).
- You live more than 80 km from the St. John’s, Marine Institute or Grenfell campuses (based on your Online Learning address in Memorial Self Service).
- You are not enrolled in any on-campus course at the St. John’s, Marine Institute or Grenfell campuses.
For eligible students, using online proctoring is optional.
If you wish to use ProctorU:
- Submit an Exam Supervisor Form at least three weeks before your exam date.
- Agree to the use of the service.
If you prefer not to use ProctorU, you may write your exam on paper with an in-person supervisor in your region. Depending on your location, you may need to select an exam site or propose a supervisor to CITL for approval. CITL will send details to your Memorial email.
What Equipment Will I Need?
To complete an online proctored exam, you must have:
- Your Campus Card and one government-issued photo ID or two government-issued photo IDs.
- A Windows or Mac computer that meets the ProctorU equipment requirements, with:
- Webcam.
- Microphone.
- Speakers.
Note: Some devices, including Chromebooks and tablets, are not compatible with ProctorU.
- A stable internet connection. A wired internet connection is best—hotspots, tethering or weak wifi connections may cause disconnections.
- A quiet location with no other people present.
- A clear workspace, like a table or desk.
- A mirror or reflective device. If your webcam is built into your computer, this is used to show the proctor the outer edges of your screen.
