Once a Newfoundlander and Labradorian, always a Newfoundlander and Labradorian.
No matter where in the world you are, there’s a tendency to remember your roots, not only personally but professionally as well. We are proud to partner with GlobalNL – created by Memorial’s alumnus, Gregory Smyth (B. Eng. ‘07) and alumnus Kingsley Gifford (B. Eng. ‘09) in 2017, for the purpose of professionally connecting Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, in both the cyber and real worlds. By using LinkedIn’s database, GlobalNL collects all ex-pats in one easy-to-use website and allows users to search by hometown, industry, current location or name.
“During my recent career transition from the oil and gas industry to the technology sector, Newfoundlanders living in Silicon Valley offered their time, advice and personal connections to help me,” said Mr. Smyth, who is based in San Francisco as a group manager with Tesla – a manufacturer of electric vehicles. “I wanted to pay this generosity forward.”
GlobalNL has built a system where others can easily find connections they are looking for.
Mr. Smyth and Mr. Gifford aim to inspire others who are moving to a new city or switching industries to feel less intimidated and more supported.
They’ve got podcasts inspiring and connecting professionals, many of whom are Memorial alumni. They’ve got in-person fireside chat events in several regions, which enable face-to-face mentorship and networking opportunities. They’ve got a solid support system that stretches across the globe of volunteers, supporters and enthusiasts. The combination of GlobalNL systems and Memorial University alumni is a powerful and exciting step.
We, at Memorial, are proud to partner with such an innovative and caring company, founded and grown by our graduates. We are excited to offer our alumni more ways to connect with each other, as well as celebrate their accomplishments, so this partnership is a perfect fit.
