Human Resources offers smoking cessation program
Is giving up smoking on your list of New Year's resolutions? Have you been wanting to quit but don't know how to break the habit? Here's a program for you!
The Department of Human Resources, in collaboration with the Newfoundland and Labrador Smoker’s Helpline, is offering a smoking cessation program for Memorial employees beginning on Jan. 31.
Under this program, group or individual counselling may be available to interested employees, as well as some cost-sharing of certain smoking cessation aids or nicotine replacement therapies.

According to the Canadian Council for Tobacco Control (CCTC), tobacco remains the leading preventable cause of disease and death in Canada, killing 37,000 Canadians annually. Direct health care costs from tobacco exceed $4.4 billion per year and the CCTC reports that for every premature death caused by tobacco, there are at least 20 people living with a tobacco-related illness.
Memorial is committed to a safe, smoke-free environment and to the long-term health of its students, faculty and staff. The university is on track to ban smoking on all of its campuses by 2013.
Since Aug. 1, 2011, smoking has been banned in the doorways of any campus building. Four designated smoking areas on the St. John’s campus have been in effect since that date and were chosen due to their proximity to student residences and on-campus apartments, as well as the campus bars located in the University Centre and in Spencer Hall. There are no smoking areas at the Marine Institute because the campus does not have a bar or on-campus living quarters.
