Memorial promotes active living and a positive work/life balance for faculty, staff and retirees by offering a variety of programs, events ,nutritional information and on-line resources focused on wellness to encourage healthy lifestyle choices.

Wellness is not the mere absence of disease. It is a proactive, preventive approach designed to achieve optimum levels of health, social and emotional functioning. Wellness can also be defined as an active process through which you become aware of and make choices toward a more successful existence.

A wellness-oriented lifestyle encourages you to adopt habits and behaviors that promote better health and an improved quality of life. It also involves the recognition that you have physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs, with each dimension being necessary for optimal levels of functioning.

Wellness is a positive approach to living - an approach that emphasizes the whole person. It is the integration of the body, mind, and spirit; and the appreciation that everything you do, think, feel, and believe has an impact on your state of health.

The Work/Life Program

Work/Life programs aim to assist employees with a wide range of needs and difficulties. We recognize that employees' needs are not static. They vary from person to person and may change over time. Some needs are shared by manyemployees while other needs may be particular to one employee. Our aim is to assist and support all employees whether on an individual or systemic basis.

The Work/Life Program maintains current information about a wide range of supports and services available at Memorial University and in the community. Through networking and referrals we are able to ensure that all employees receive timely and appropriate assistance.

Contact the Work/Life Program Coordinator at 864-7405 to discuss your individual wellness needs or to obtain information on upcoming events.

Preferred Rate Program

The Preferred Rate Program is designed to encourage employees and retirees to make better use of campus recreation facilities.Under this program, Memorial will pay up to 50% of the cost (up to a maximum of $10 a pay period) of a membership at The Works (Field House or Aquarena) for eligible employees in St. John's. To apply for the PRP, employees must complete a PRP aplication form at The Works. Current improvements to the program permits employees to join at any time during the year.

In Corner Brook, Memorial has partnered with three local fitness centres (YMCA, Forever Young Fitness Centre and PACE Fitness) to offer a similar service to employees at Grenfell College.
