Undergraduate Students

Our department is home to award-winning faculty with research interests in animal behaviour, cellular and molecular biology, ecology, environmental and conservation biology, evolution, genetics, marine biology, microbiology, physiology, plant biology and quantitative biology.

Working with their faculty advisers and our undergraduate officer, students can design their academic program to acquire expertise in four broad areas of study: Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Ecology and Conservation and Marine Biology. We offer our students the opportunity to gain hands-on laboratory, field and cooperative education experiences to acquire the skills necessary to work within the discipline of Biology and to pursue careers in a broad range of areas. For example, education, environmental conservation, government, industry, medicine and related health professions.

While the majority of our undergraduate programs will be completed on the St. John's campus, students are encouraged to take advantage of Biology field courses offered at Memorial University’s Bonne Bay Marine Station and the Harlow Campus. The Bonne Bay Marine Station is located within Gros Morne National Park, a World Heritage Site, on Newfoundland's west coast. It offers students unparalleled opportunities in marine and terrestrial science. Memorial University’s Harlow Campus, located in Essex, England, offers students the opportunity to live and study in England. Our courses at Harlow focus on vertebrate diversity and applied biology. Our vertebrate field course includes visits to the London and Whipsnade Zoos, the Natural History Museum in London, Darwin House and various vertebrate collections at Cambridge University. Our applied biology field course includes visits to Royal Society for the Protection of Birds conservation and restoration sites, the John Innes Centre in Norwich, a world-renowned agricultural research centre, and an in-depth visit to a British private hospital.

Foundations in Biology, non-majors course, is also offered as a field course at the Harlow campus.
