The Big Splash

The United Nations has declared 2021-30 as the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

In 2022, we will highlight the many ways that Memorial University is a world leader in oceans-related work.

This year, we’re making a Big Splash, with a year of celebrations to showcase everything under the sea at Memorial. Join us for ocean events taking place all across Newfoundland and Labrador and help us choose a name for our majestic blue whale skeleton.

Uniquely positioned amid the harsh North Atlantic, Memorial University is a world-leader in ocean related research, teaching and learning, and  public engagement, and we want to share that with everyone in Newfoundland and Labrador, and beyond.

Dive right in: the water is fine!

HELP US MAKE A BIG SPLASH!

Join in the fun as units across Memorial celebrate all things “ocean” with the Big Splash, a year-long celebration that’s all about sharing our amazing ocean-based work with the public.

To get things started, we’re offering up to $1500 to support public-facing events and projects through the Big Splash Fund.

All funded events/projects must take place between May 2022 and May 2023, and should include the public as a primary audience for event/project activities.

We welcome applications from all Memorial campuses, units, and disciplines. The Big Splash Fund can support existing/ongoing initiatives, or can be used to support something new. While public partners are not mandatory, we encourage applicants to consider including collaboration with external groups and partners in planning and executing activities, as appropriate.

The first cycle of the Big Splash Fund closed June 22nd  with numerous applications.  The second cycle has now opened, September 21  and closes October 12, 2022. Applications will be assessed by an internal committee and successful awardees will be notified by the end of October.
