Islam in "Western" Scholarship: The rise of Islamic Studies as an Academic Discipline.

What do we know about Islam? And why do we know what we know about Islam? This seminar will give a tentative answer to these two questions by examining the evolution of Islamic Studies as an academic discipline. Jung will analyze ”Western” knowledge about Islam as emerging in the late nineteenth century based on a fusion of the teachings of Islamic reform, the encounter with colonial modernization, and intellectual debates about scholarly and literary interpretations of Muslim culture.
