Regional Workshop in Labrador City
This event will be held in Labrador City on March 25-26, 2013 from 8:30am to 3:00pm.
This workshop will provide an opportunity for local participants to share their work, challenges and ideas with municipal representatives; non-profit groups; small businesses; government agencies; community volunteers; and Memorial University faculty, students and staff.
It will also give Memorial faculty, students and staff a chance to discuss their research, teaching and/or outreach with local stakeholders, while also helping guide regional priorities for future Memorial collaboration.
The following themes have been developed with a local planning committee, and discussions could possibly surround:
Social and municipal impacts of a booming economy
- How do we address the unwanted consequences of rapid development, such as stresses on municipal infrastructure and housing?
- What are the impacts on non-mining activities, such as health care, education, volunteerism, and social welfare?
- How can we capture the positive opportunities which present themselves as a result of increased economic activity?
Labour market development
- Where will the workers come from and how will we make sure they remain in a community over the long term?
- What is the "right" balance between permanent residency and fly-in/fly-out status?
- How do we diversify the economy and work toward developing a mining cluster?
Fostering sustainable and resilient communities
- With the dependence upon natural resource extraction, how do we promote environmental stewardship into the future?
- How can we ensure that we don't forget long-term development as we struggle to deal with short-term priorities?
- With influxes of workers at varying times, how is community cohesion maintained and used to deal with change?
There will also be a Memorial Presents Public Forum held the evening before the workshop. Dr. John Thistle from the Labrador Institute will be presenting on Community Resiliency: Navigating the Boom and Bust Cycle in a Remote Mining Community. There will also be two local panelists. This will be held at the Arts and Culture Centre in Labrador City on March 25th from 7:00-9:00pm. It will include a question and answer session and be followed by a reception.

The registration deadline is March 18th. However, flights and accommodations are limited, so please register as soon as possible if you would like to attend.
Workshop registration is free and meals during the workshop are provided by the Harris Centre.
