Social entrepreneurship holds much promise for tackling a number of societal challenges, from climate change to reviving rural communities. While businesses are primarily designed to generate profits, and non-profits focus mainly on solving social and environmental problems, social enterprises offer the opportunity to do both: doing good (for society) while also doing well (financially). But balancing social and economic goals presents a number of challenges in addition to opening up some important possibilities.

Panelists:
Dr. Natalie Slawinski Natalie Slawinski is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Business Administration, Memorial University of Newfoundland. She received her Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario. Her research focuses on how organizations balance short-term economic goals with longer-term social and environmental goals. Natalie is very interested in social enterprises because they represent a promising new model for contributing to society while using business principles. She has worked with the Shorefast Foundation on Fogo Island to examine which aspects of their model can be helpful to other organizations and communities. Natalie will draw on her experiences with the Shorefast Foundation’s work on Fogo Island to share lessons on how social entrepreneurship can help renew rural communities
Penelope Rowe is CEO of Community Sector Council. The Community Sectori Council Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to strengthening and promoting the essential role that voluntary and nonprofit, community organizations play in building healthy and prosperous communities. The organization regularly hosts Social Enterprise training sessions.
Gail Hoskins graduated from Memorial University of NL in 1996 with a Bachelor of Commerce (Coop) degree. In September of 1996, she began her career in the field of community and economic development with the Coast of Bays Corporation assisting with its first Strategic Economic Plan. It was in 1998 Gail was hired as an Economic Development Officer with the Department of Development & Rural Renewal at that time, now known as the Department of Innovation, Business & Rural Development.
Gail volunteers with St. Alban’s Recreation Committee, which she has been involved with since 1998. Since this time, the committee has developed many programs and services related to recreational activities and facilities. This group has been successful in sustaining its operations and achieving its social mission.
