The Harris Centre is seeking applications for a Research and Policy Innovation Intern to support a collaborative waste management research program in partnership with the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB).

Under the title of RESEARCH ASSISTANT II (1 Year Contractual, Full-Time Position with Possibility of Extension), the successful applicant will perform a variety of research-oriented tasks focused on furthering understanding of the opportunities and innovations for enhancing waste management practices and policy in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Activities will include:

  • reviewing and synthesizing research dealing with best practices and promising innovations for the management of different priority waste streams;
  • gathering information using a variety of methods, including literature reviews, interview-based approaches and direct observation; 
  • writing reports and preparing presentations for both professional and lay audiences from research, analysis and consultation; 
  • support and participate in program evaluation activities; 
  • support and participate in knowledge mobilization activities associated with the program; 
  • and performing other related duties as required. 

The person in this position will report to the Knowledge Mobilization Manager (Bojan Furst) and Coordinator (Chris Paterson), and is expected to spend a significant amount of their time interacting directly with the MMSB in order to enhance their understanding of the practical aspects of waste management activities and priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience (1-3 years) in conducting and presenting research; completion of most college- or university-level work equivalent towards a Masters degree or any equivalent combination of experience and training, and familiarity with research focused on different aspects of waste management and waste utilization (e.g., circular economy). 
  • The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communications (both writing and speaking) skills, comfortable giving small group presentations; demonstrate initiative; have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision to manage multiple project timelines and assigned tasks effectively; be collaborative and effective in a team-based setting.
  • The candidate must have good knowledge of MS Office products, and be proficient in email, word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software, be comfortable with technology and possess strong qualitative analysis skills. 
  • Work towards or completion of a doctorate degree would be considered an asset. Students nearing completion of a graduate degree may be considered

SALARY:  $45,383 - $63,642
