The Harris Centre—MMSB Post-Doctoral Fellowship program will provide funding for the salary and some associated research costs of a post-doctorate researcher conducting research related to solid waste management in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Applications will be accepted from post-doctoral candidates from September 14, 2020 to September 29 2020.

This position is located in St. John’s, NL Canada. The selected candidate will be required to relocate to St. John’s for the duration of the post-doc appointment. (Please note that the university does not provide relocation assistance for post-doctoral appointments.)

Details:

- Up to $50,000/yr (plus benefits) for 24 months;
- $5,000 for travel and related research support;
- The successful applicant must be able to start between 1 September and 1 December 2020.

What Research Areas Are Eligible?

The scope of research includes municipal solid wastes (MSW), specifically from residential and industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) sectors, as well as construction, renovation, and demolition waste. Specifically, the program has prioritized research focused on waste streams identified in the 2019 review of the 2002 Provincial Waste Management Strategy, entitled “Finishing What we Started,” and the 2018 Canadian Council of Minister’s of Environment’s Zero Plastic Waste Strategy and Action Plans.

These include, but are not limited to:
• packaging and printed paper;
• hazardous waste;
• organics;
• construction, renovation, and demolition waste;
• single-use and disposable plastics;
• plastic waste from aquatic activities; and
• durable plastics.

Broad Objectives Include:

• supporting MMSB’s efforts to advance the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy through a coordinated research program on key priorities and emerging opportunities;
• identifying practical opportunities for utilizing solid waste streams as inputs for potential business development, job creation, and developing value-added enterprises;
• enhancing waste management knowledge and expertise in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Responsibilities:

The post-doctoral fellow will be responsible for advancing and overseeing a coordinated research program that responds to priority themes identified in the documents named above.

The person in this position will be expected to:
• Work closely with one or more academic supervisors;
• With supervisor(s), work with MMSB to develop a research plan that addresses one or more of the identified priority themes;
• Interact directly with MMSB (including the possibility of having a part-time office space at MMSB) to enhance understanding of the practical aspects of MMSB’s mandate, mission, and activities;
• Participate in program evaluation and relevant professional development activities;
• Publish and present the work conducted over the term of the fellowship;
• Participate in “knowledge mobilization” activities associated with the program; and
• Work with the Harris Centre coordinator to: ensure coordination of the research activities, including supervision of projects awarded funding through the Program’s applied research fund; generate interest in identified priorities through stakeholder engagement sessions, presentations to various groups and other forms of outreach; identify potential relationships between the collaborating organization and the university to advance mutual interests.
