What's new
Technical Services has just acquired a new water jet cutting system thanks to last year’s provincial budget funding to support new research technology at Memorial.
Construction of a new facility to house the unit began this past April and the machine, a Flying Bridge System with a 50 HP intensifier pump by Flow International Corporation, was installed and operational by mid October.
Water at 60,000 psi flows through a 0.014” diameter orifice and mixes with abrasive to create the cutting action. This erosion process offers exceptional flexibility with the fabrication of research prototypes. Many types of materials of varying thicknesses can be cut.
This includes steel, aluminum, copper, stone, glass, plastics and composites. Cut quality is also excellent. Any two dimensional shape can be cut to within 0.005” over the 48” x 96” working envelope and to minimize taper, the machine has been equipped with a dynamic cutting head. This machine is the first of its kind in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
Bill Burke and Brian Joyce recently completed programming and maintenance training on the new water jet system at Flow International’s facility in Wixom, Michigan.
