For part-time students, the program is designed to permit completion of all degree requirements within three academic years (nine semesters) or two academic years (six semesters).

For full-time students, course route, admitted prior to Fall 2011, the program is designed to permit completion of all degree requirements within one academic year (three semesters), as follows:
- Fall semester: SCWK 6011, 6312 (institute), 6412
- Winter semester: 6322 (institute), 6422, Elective
- Spring semester: 6332 (institute), 6912 (field internship), 6432 (research internship), 6442 (colloquium)
