Annual Nursing Charity Ball a fun night out for a great cause

Guess who's turning 16 in 2014?

The annual Nursing Charity Ball turns 16 this coming March, and to celebrate the milestone students from Memorial's School of Nursing (SON) and the Centre for Nursing Studies (CNS) are already planning for a special night out.

The charity ball is set for March 29, 2014, and organizers are beginning to collect donations for the popular silent auction that is part of evening's festivities.

The Nursing Charity Ball is a fun night out for students, faculty and staff, but it's also important fundraiser for a local charity, and an important way that nursing students give back to community.

Each year through the charity ball, students support a different community-based organization. Over the years nursing students have raised thousands of dollars for local charities, including most recently, the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Planned Parenthood: Newfoundland and Labrador's Sexual Health

This year it's Street Reach, the organization that reaches out to homeless people in St. John's with hot meals, lunch deliveries, a needle exchange program, and many other supports.

"The charity ball is a wonderful way to get both schools to come together, and we're very proud of that," says Megan Carey, a third-year SON student who is coordinating this year's event with Kayla Tobin, who is in her second year at the CNS. "And we're proud that we can accomplish a great deal for a great cause.

Megan and Kayla welcome donations for the silent auction and raffle. They're gratefully accepting donations large and small, everything from gift certificates, clothing, artwork, dinner at a downtown restaurant to plane tickets and hotel rooms. Some people donate services, including photography sessions, or hair styling.

"Any donation, large or small, can go a long way to ensuring the success of the 2014 Nursing Charity Ball," says Kayla.

The 16th annual Nursing Charity Ball is set for March 29, 2014 at the Holiday Inn and Suites.
