Research Interests

  • theories of morphology and syntax; Algonquian languages (especially dialects of Cree-Montagnais-Naskapi spoken in Québec and Labrador); Tibetan; first language acquisition (see Chisasibi Child Language Acquisition Study, CCLAS)
  • causes and effects of language loss; community-centred strategies to halt or reverse language loss (language maintenance / revitalization strategies); language maintenance in relation to the Aboriginal languages of Canada; "translating" theoretically focused research into community-usable resources
  • oral literatures of speakers of Algonquian languages; dissemination of oral literatures (in translation) beyond the Aboriginal speech communities; technical issues arising from translating from polysynthetic languages (Algonquian) into non-polysynthetic languages (English).
