IMPORTANT DATES

It is always a good idea to consult with the University Diary for a full list of relevant dates. You may also wish to refer to the Office of the Registrar's Relevant Dates section for information about registration dates and times.

CHARTING YOUR PROGRESS

A new academic regulation that comes into effect this semester will ensure students have a good sense of their academic progress early in the semester.

According to the regulation, at least 20 per cent of all course work must be graded and returned to students by the last day to drop classes without academic prejudice - Oct. 24. (A grade of DR will be assigned in these circumstances and will be entered on the student's record.)

If you have not received grades in a particular course, contact your instructor. If you are having difficulty in any of your courses, you should speak with your instructor about what you can do to improve your performance.

Drop by the Academic Advising Centre or make an appointment with an advisor if you have any questions or concerns about your courses.

MEMORIAL LAUNCHES MIDTERM RESOURCE FAIR

First-year students and those who haven't chosen a program yet are invited to find out more about what's offered at Memorial through the Midterm Resource Fair, scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012.

The Midterm Resource Fair is a partnership between Memorial University of Newfoundland's Student Union, Student Success Programs and the Academic Advising Centre.

The Fair aims to provide undergraduate students at Memorial University's St. John's campus with easy access to:

  • general academic advice prior to winter registration;
  • an opportunity to book individual advising appointments at the Academic Advising Centre;
  • information about faculties and schools;
  • opportunities to learn about involvement in academic clubs and societies
  • and the tools required to help ensure undergraduate success.
The Midterm Resource Fair will take place from 12-2 p.m. on the third floor of the University Centre in The Landing and The Loft.

HELP CENTRES

As mid-term exams and deadlines for assignments draw near, you may need a little help with some of your courses.

There are many help centres on the St. John's campus to assist you with your studies, staffed by senior students who have experience with that subject.

If you are having difficulty with a particular topic, question or assignment in one of your courses, see if there is a help centre to assist you.

Keep in mind - the staff at the help centre will not complete the work for you. Make an attempt at solving the problems yourself, and then bring your work to the centre so you can get the help you need to understand the material or complete the assignment.

The following departments offer students assistance through help centres:

  • Chemistry Help Centre C-2012 864-8085
  • Computer Labs
  • Computer Science Help Centre EN-2031C No Phone
  • Economics Help Centre A-3047 No Phone
  • ESL Resource Centre SP-3017 864-7681 (Janet Benger)
  • French Help Centre SN-4035 864-7636
  • German Help Centre SN-3062 864-8831
  • Digital Language Centre (SN-4022; SN4030) 864-8585 (Karin Thomeier)
  • Math Help Centre HH-3015 No Phone
  • Physics Help Centre CP-3071 864-8899
  • The Commons 864-6159
  • Writing Centre SN-2053 864-3168 (Virginia Ryan)

TIPS FOR STEPPING UP YOUR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

How is the semester going so far? Do you want to change that C to a B?

Then let us make some practical suggestions that may help improve your academic performance.

  • Keep a daily agenda, as well as a weekly calendar, on which you can keep track of classes, assignments, tests, tutorials, appointments, etc.
  • Keep a separate exercise book for each subject with a pocket on the inside cover to keep handouts secure; or
  • Keep a binder tabbed to separate each subject's notes and paper. Remember to write the date and page numbers on each set of lecture notes, as this makes review easier.
  • Budget your time to maximize its use. You now have a good idea of exactly how much time you need to study. On average, you should spend two hours of study for every hour spent in class.
  • Start your written assignments well in advance of the due date. How much preparation time an assignment takes will depend on the required length of the paper and the complexity of your topic.
  • Set deadlines for yourself and stick to them. Plan to do assignments or study well in advance so you won't have to cram everything in at the last minute.
  • Make a realistic daily to-do list. Finishing even small tasks gives you a sense of accomplishment.

Keep in mind that the University Counselling Centre offers workshops throughout the semester aimed at improving your study skills.

SELECTING COURSES FOR THE WINTER SEMESTER

Registration for the winter semester begins on Nov. 5th so it's time to start thinking about the courses you will take in January.

The Registrar's Office will assign you a specific date and time to log into  Memorial Self-Service and register for your courses. Check your mun.ca email for that information or click on the Registration Times button in your Self-Service account.

Courses offerings for Winter 2013 will be posted on the Registrar's Office website and in Self Service in the coming weeks.

If you have questions or need advice on choosing courses, be sure to visit the Academic Advising Centre. You can make an appointment or drop by the centre and wait for the next available advisor.
