The Dr. Christopher Heughan Award
This award is an annual recognition of a faculty member for excellence in undergraduate teaching in general surgery. Nominees of this award are selected via an email vote by the 3rd and 4th year clinical clerks.
Dr. Heughan was a general surgeon most notably recognized for introducing advanced trauma life support course programs to the province. He served as Course Director of ATLS from 1984 to 2001, and held a teaching position at Memorial University from 1973 to 2011. The award honors his legacy and commitment to undergraduate teaching in the discipline of general surgery.

The Dr. David B. Peddle Award
This award is an annual award which recognizes a faculty member for outstanding teaching in the undergraduate orthopedic surgery curriculum. Nominees of this award are selected via an email vote by the 3rd and 4th year clinical clerks.
Dr. Peddle was an orthopedic surgeon in the discipline of surgery. He spent his entire 40+ year career dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning in the area of orthopedic surgery.

The Dr. A. E. (Ted) Shapter Award
This award is an annual recognition an orthopedic resident for their excellence in teaching and learning. Nominees of this award are selected via an email vote by the 3rd and 4th year clinical clerks.
Dr. Shapter was first medical director of the Janeway Children’s Rehabilitation Centre. Dr. Shapter is well remembered for his determination and fighting spirit, and this award honors that same spirit of ambition and enthusiasm demonstrated by a resident in the area of teaching and learning.

The Couves Award
This award is an annual recognition of a resident with the highest-rated research project presented at the annual Resident Research Day. This award is administered annually as a joint effort between the Disciplines of general surgery and orthopedic surgery.
The award honors Dr. Cecil Couves, a Professor of the Discipline of Surgery at Memorial University who was appointed to the Medical Research Council of Canada in 1977. Dr. Couves was Chair of the Discipline of Surgery from 1974 to 1979. This award honors his legacy of distinction within surgical research.

The following awards are granted by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Dean's Advisory Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards.
Dr. Falah Maroun Award in Surgery
This award is an annual award granted to the student in the doctor of medicine degree program with the highest collective score on the surgery clerkship examinations and a recognizable performance on the surgery In-Training Evaluation Reports.
The award honors Dr. Falah Maroun for his years of service to the Newfoundland and Labrador community as a skilled surgeon, a respected leader and a mentor to medical students and residents. Provided by the Discipline of Surgery, the award will be granted by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Dean’s Advisory Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards.
The Tom Scott Surgery Award for Anatomy
This award is granted annually to a student who has demonstrated a high level of achievement in anatomy during their first year in the doctor of medicine degree program. The award has a monetary value of $500.
Dr. Tom Scott’s leadership within anatomy and undergraduate education at Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Scott served as undergraduate assistant dean from 1998 to 2004 and his passion for anatomy teaching was recognized when he received the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1995. This award will be granted by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Dean’s Advisory Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards.
CAGS Resident Teaching Award
This award is an annual recognition of a resident for excellence in demonstrated teaching excellence. Nominees of this award are selected by the program director.

National CAGS CSF Laparoscopic Skills competition
This competition provides the chance for a general surgery resident to be selected and participate in the national CSF laparoscopic skills competition.
