Niger-Congo Languages

Derek Nurse, John Hewson, Sarah Rose

To provide an analysis, typology, and historical background for verbal categories, especially tense and aspect, in selected non-Bantu Niger-Congo languages. We intend to publish the results as a book.

We have selected twenty representative languages, spoken from Africa's far west Atlantic coast across to the Sudan in the east. We are doing an analysis and sketch of the verb system of each. To this we will add end chapters, with overviews of tense/aspect and other verbal categories. As these are nearly all almost unknown languages, we expect this will contribute both to general knowledge of tense-aspect systems and to African language typology.
