IM Messaging Scams - June 10th, 2013

There is a current instant messaging (IM) scam with QQ and other student IM accounts which have been compromised and used to solicit parents or relatives for money. Parents are provided a phone number to call and there is someone impersonating a faculty member requesting money. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and Campus Enforcement have been notified, but clients should avoid providing personal or financial information to unknown parties and do not follow links in unsolicited communications. For more tips on how to protect yourself online, C&C offers a free IT security awareness course at Desire2Learn. You can also protect yourself with a free McAfee Anti-virus download at the Memorial University portal.
