Immigration is at the center of Canadian culture and industry. Provincial and territorial governments throughout Canada have identified immigration as being critical to social and economic development. Your business or organization will need to be well-positioned to avail of the opportunities that will come from this evolving landscape. You will need to ensure you and your staff possess the knowledge and expertise required about immigration laws, policies, and procedures to make the most of these social and economic opportunities.
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the rationale for immigration and also offer a review of immigration laws, policies and procedures, as they pertain to employers and individuals seeking to become permanent residents of Canada. Participants will also gain an understanding the various types of immigration statuses and the associated implications for studying, working, and living in Canada.
Key Learning Outcomes
- Review Canada's immigration history.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the legislation (Immigration and Refugee Protection Act - IRPA) and
- Regulations (Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations - IRPR) governing Canada's immigration.
- Explore the different categories of temporary residents (visitors, temporary workers, international students, workers) and permanent residents (economic immigrants, family sponsorships, refugees, H&C).
- Compare and contrast proof of citizenship and grant of citizenship
- Review the difference types of work permits available (those supported by the Temporary Foreign Worker Program/Labour Market Impact Assessments and those that are LMIA exempt and eligible under the International Mobility Program such as International Treaties, Significant Benefit, nominees/endorsees etc.)
- Recognize the expectations, duties and responsibilities for both employers and foreign workers
