Fifty new graduates from the Faculty of Education's St. John's campus were officially welcomed into the teaching profession during the Teacher Induction Ceremony held Oct. 19.

The new primary and elementary teachers were presented with pins and recited the Teacher’s Affirmation of Professional Responsibility during the ceremony, which is co-hosted by the Faculty of Education and the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association (NLTA).

Speaking on behalf of graduates, Ashley Hennifent said she always wanted to be a teacher.

“Being a teacher is more complex than studying textbooks.”

Ms. Hennifent discovered that group work was a large part of the program and she needed to rely on her peers – not just herself – to succeed. Those connections, she noted, are what helped get her through the program.

“This profession is all about collaboration,” said Ms. Hennifent.

She also thanked the faculty on behalf of students for all their help throughout the education program.

Dr. Kirk Anderson, dean, Faculty of Education, told the graduates they are the future of education and they’ll have opportunities to teach a new generation in a changing world.

“The opportunities are out there and they will take you as far as you’d like.”

Dean Ingram, president of the NLTA, said the job of the new graduates is to teach students, not curriculum, and as teachers they’ll have many opportunities to have an extraordinary impact on the lives of their students.

“You’re holding the future in your hands. You’ll help shape it.”

Dale Kirby, minister of education and early childhood development, described teaching as one of the most important professions in the world.

He said preparation at Memorial for teaching careers is just the first step in the graduates’ education as they begin their careers. He also advised the graduates to take every opportunity to get to know school principals and other teachers and to make these potential colleagues aware of their teaching qualifications.

The Faculty of Education congratulates all those who were inducted into the teaching profession and those who graduated with education degrees this month at the Grenfell and St. John’s campuses.
