NSSE Population Definitions

First-Year Students

The student profile is broader than first-time, first-year students. It includes transfer, part time, distance education, and returning students if they are still considered first-year students according to cumulative credits.  First-year students are expected to have less than 30 credit hours completed by the end of the academic year (this excludes AP credits). Students are only included if they are registered in both the Fall and Winter semester of the same academic year of NSSE administration.

Senior Students

Seniors are those students who were enrolled in the Fall semester and were considered probable graduates in the following Spring or Summer. They do not include Fall graduating seniors or those students with a previous degree. Only those students registered in both the Fall and Winter semester of the academic year of NSSE administration are sampled.  Seniors are defined as being less than 30 credit hours from graduation.
