Outstanding Community Service Award - Lori Pike, B.Comm.(Co-op.)'95, MBA'00

Lori Pike’s life trajectory changed forever when her son Adam was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of four-years-old. Thankfully, Adam is currently thriving. But at the time, the devastating news led her to Candlelighters NL - a charitable organization governed by a volunteer board of directors who are dedicated to improving the quality of life for children diagnosed with cancer. Ms. Pike has dedicated her heart and soul to the organization since 2008 – one year after Adam’s diagnosis.

“Without Lori’s commitment and long hours punched for Night of Delight, Candlelighters would be at a loss and the night would not have grown into the success that it has become. Lori’s huge heart and meticulous attention to detail have not gone unnoticed and Candlelighters NL is forever grateful,” stated Noah Zanbilowicz, president of Candlelighters NL.

Also affectionately known as Momma Candlelighter, Ms. Pike has acted as the organization’s communications director, Camp Delight parent representative, president, and her current position of treasurer and “Night of Delight” coordinator.

Camp Delight is an eight-day overnight camp for youth aged seven to 17 years old, who are either living with or beyond cancer, their siblings and bereaved siblings. At approximately $1,400 per camper, Candlelighters NL covers the cost. Relying on the financial support of other organizations as well as key annual fundraisers, one of the largest fundraising events is its annual Night of Delight.

Ms. Pike has dedicated herself to improve the supports for families as they navigate through their child’s cancer journey. She has developed a diagnosis support kit with items for the child and financial support for the family. She developed and maintains the Birthday Club program where every child and sibling receives a birthday and gift card up to their 17th birthday. She was also instrumental in the development of the scholarship and bereavement programs.

In 2019, she was recognized by Volkswagen Canada as part of their Volksgiving customer appreciation initiative. She was one of 14 outstanding Canadians selected by Volkswagen out of over 1,300 submissions from across the country, for going above and beyond the call of duty for her work in supporting families of children living with and beyond cancer.

In her day job, as director of budgeting at Memorial University, she holds accountability for the allocation of the university operating budget. In 2017, she received the President’s Award for Exceptional Community Service.

Candlelighters NL is truly a guiding force in the Pike family. Adam hopes to follow in his mother’s footsteps and become a Camp Counsellor, and Ms. Pike’s husband, Jason and her son Lucas are also volunteers.
