Memorial to lead symposium at World Aquaculture meeting
Professors Craig Purchase (Biology) and Ian Fleming (Ocean Sciences), along with post-doctoral fellow José Santos, and graduate students Brendan Wringe and Emily Zimmermann are off to Prague, Czech Republic this weekend. Drs. Purchase and Fleming are co-chairing a symposium on “Aquaculture escapees: causes, consequences, and prevention” at the World Aquaculture meeting, which is being held September 1-5 with over 1,200 speakers.
There are 17 speakers in the symposium from all over the world, with the keynote address by Tim Dempster from the University of Melbourne. The Memorial-led initiative stems from a NSERC Strategic Grant to Drs. Fleming and Purchase, and adjunct faculty Edward Trippel and John Brattey entitled “Assessing and mitigating risk from a diversifying aquaculture industry: the potential for interaction between escapee and wild Atlantic cod."
