The Testimony of a Hundred Witnesses (1858) |
THE PRESENT HOUR.
The particulars which led to my conviction and conversion were the following combined circumstances: the tears, prayers and warning voice of a kind father, the death of a relative, and the earnest and sincere entreaties of a fond schoolmate.
In the struggle for conversion, the impression that the present was the last opportunity for me to seek God, aided me much in the mighty conflict to obtain deliverance from sin.
Encouragement to persevere in the life of self-denial and holiness, was found in the kindness and hospitality of the people of God toward me, and in the words of Him who spoke as never man spake (Matthew 6:33), which secure the promise of God's blessings on the obedient,--but most particularly in the conviction of individual responsibility.
My convictions commenced early in life, and I was converted when but a boy, and immersed, near Newburg, Pennsylvania. A few years afterward, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the compiler of this book made a passing remark to me on the subject of the ministry, which left its impression. But finally I became submerged in business, almost forgetting God, His church and [96] service. However, during a series of meetings, it pleased God to arouse me greatly, and to use the uplifted finger of Elder W. McFadden to point out my responsibility in the affair of other men's salvation. My desires were increased and powers awakened.--After a fearful struggle, I abandoned business and entered the greater work of preaching the gospel, and the joy I experienced on the morning I started fully in the work is inexpressible. The fear of the journey far exceeded the troubles of the way. I have been preaching for five years. My responsibility increases, but the prospect for Heaven is greater now than ever. I would say to all, on this subject,--obey the call of God at the sacrifice of everything else.
