The Testimony of a Hundred Witnesses (1858) |
THE SAME GOOD OLD STORY.
About the year 1820, I was impressed with the necessity of a change of heart, and resolved to begin in the great work of salvation. The first convictions [26] moved me during the preaching of the late lamented Elder John Elliott, who was an efficient instrument in the hand of God in declaring the Gospel. He is now, doubtless, enjoying the blessed rest, but though dead, he yet speaketh.
From the time of my conviction, I continued in a feeble way to seek the Lord, until New-year's eve, 1823, when I attended a watch-meeting, and was greatly exercised. After returning home from this meeting, I read several pages in the biography of a good man, and then bowed myself at the throne of grace, and wrestled for some time, exercising faith in Christ and the promises of the holy Word. The Lord answered my prayers, the burden of my sin was removed, and heavenly peace shed abroad in my poor heart. Blessed be the name of God for His mercy! It appeared as if the heavens were opened and the angels were surrounding me. It was really a new creation to me. For three days I could not contain myself, but went about to tell my friends of my joy and happiness.
I continued on my journey in the good way, and never doubted what God for Christ's sake has done for me. I have had many trials and dark seasons, and often noticed where I have stepped astray, but through the grace of God, I have reached the age of sixty-four, without losing my enjoyment of religion, and I trust the balance of my days will find me as trustful and hopeful in Christ.
