1. WELCOME MESSAGE AND PURPOSE OF THE LIST
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Welcome to the Stone-Campbell discussion list. This list is designed to
discuss all issues related to the history of the Stone-Campbell movement
and its religious traditions.

The primary purpose is to discuss the history of the Restoration Movement
by:

* reconstructing the events and conditions that established and
     shaped it,

* examining the life and work of the individuals who influenced it,

* interpreting its historic literature,

* exploring the theology and experience which engaged the mind and heart
     of its members and leaders.

This list is not a forum for discussion of biblical texts, theology or
doctrine. Another list called RM-BIBLE, sponsored by the College of
Biblical Studies at Abilene Christian University, is designed for
preachers and scholars interested in the discussion and meaning of
biblical texts and doctrine.

This tradition, sometimes known as the Restoration Movement, includes the
Churches of Christ, the independent Christian Churches and the Disciples
of Christ. The Christian Connexion or Christian movement which later
joined the United Church of Christ, the Christadelphians, and the more
recently formed International Churches of Christ (or Boston Movement) are
other traditions that share some of the same history.

The list is sponsored by the College of Biblical Studies at Abilene
Christian University, a college associated with the Churches of Christ.
Messages posted on Stone-Campbell reflect solely the opinions of those who
expressed them and have neither the approval nor disapproval of the host
institution, Abilene Christian University.

The functions of moderating this list are divided between two individuals.
Jim McMillan of the University of Illinois, who is affiliated with the
Independent Christian Churches/Churches of Christ, handles list
maintenance tasks. Hans Rollman, Professor of Religious Studies at
Memorial University of Newfoundland and whose roots are with the Churches
of Christ, moderates the content of discussions on the list. Discussions
and the perspectives of the whole tradition are welcome and encouraged.

Anyone who is a member of the list may pose a question or respond to any
posting. We ask that good etiquette be used by each individual on the
list. Please refrain from flaming or the use of sarcasm and please keep
your posts relevant to the history of the tradition. Please also respect
the opinions of those with whom you disagree. Also please take care in
what you write: all list postings will be archived, so that anything you
say will be permanently preserved for posterity.

Some members of the discussion group are creating electronic versions
of key documents of the Stone-Campbell tradition. For more information
about these documents or to volunteer to assist in the creation of
additional documents, please contact Jim McMillan at:

3. OPTIONS FOR READING MESSAGES POSTED TO STONE-CAMPBELL
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

There are two methods of receiving the messages posted on the Stone-Campbell
List:

1. The REGULAR version, which means that you will receive each message in
your email box shortly after it is posted to the list. The volume of
messages posted per day varies widely, but even on quiet days you can
expect to receive around 10 messages. On higher volume days you will
receive from 25-30 messages.

2. A DIGEST version, which means that you will receive a longer file once a week
containing all the messages posted during that week.

Subscribing to the DIGEST version is a little more complicated than
subscribing to just the REGULAR version. Here are the steps involved:

     (1) First subscribe to the REGULAR version of Stone-Campbell by
following the directions given in example (1) above. (NOTE: You
have to be subscribed to the REGULAR version of Stone-Campbell
to be able to post messages to Stone-Campbell.)

     (2) Next tell Stone-Campbell not to mail you the messages as they are
posted to the list. This is done by activating the NOMAIL option
and how to do this is shown in example (3) above.

     (3) The final step is to subscribe to Stone-Campbell-Digest by:

          -1- Addressing a message to:

               majordomo@genesis.acu.edu

-2- In the body of the message type:

               subscribe stone-campbell-digest

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The archives for S-C are kept by Abilene Christian University and are
available via GOPHER, the World Wide Web, or anonymous FTP.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

To retrieve files via GOPHER, point your GOPHER to:

bible.acu.edu

    4. The STONE-CAMPBELL Discussion Group

      2. The STONE-CAMPBELL Discussion Group Archives

At this level, the archives are arranged chronologically. Be advised that
since each file contains the postings for a few or even several days, the

Via WWW (Mosaic/Netscape/Lynx), open the URL:

gopher://Bible.acu.edu/11gopher_root_sc%3a%5b000000%5d

command (LYNX), to transfer the file(s) to your Internet host or directly
to your computer, depending upon how you are connected to the Internet.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

4. follow this directory path:

cd stone-campbell.dir

The archives are kept under the above directory. Use the "get" command to
