With one week left to go in the annual 12 days of giving, Campus Food Bank volunteers are counting on the generosity of faculty, staff and students to help them keep the shelves well-stocked!
The food bank calls on departments and offices across Memorial every year at this time to get involved in the 12 days of giving, which is now in its 7th year.
Last year 32 departments across campus participated, donating almost 5,800 food items to Memorial’s Campus Food Bank for a 43 per cent increase over the previous year.
The event plays with the notion of the 12 days of Christmas, and each day there are suggested food items to donate. The amount corresponds to the day of giving. You can check out www.mun.ca/campusfoodbank/12_Days_of_Giving.php to learn more.
“We don’t set targets,’ says Anne Sinnott, who works in the Department of Biochemistry and has been a member of the food bank’s board of directors for several years. “We just challenge people to do better every year.”
As an incentive, prizes are awarded to departments that collect the most donations in total and per capita, with the food bank awarding a special appreciation coffee break to the two winning departments.
“We want the university community to know that their generosity is much appreciated, and extremely important to us,” says Ms. Sinnott. In fact it’s essential, and how we keep the shelves filled with supplies.”
