From the Desk of Stephen Dodge

Steven Dodge

Welcome to From the Desk of, our first quarterly Human Resources (HR) message. This message is an avenue through which I will be providing you, our Memorial HR clients, with updates and information on what is happening in HR at the university and what you can expect from us in the months to come.

This fall has been a busy one for HR as we have a number of significant projects in the works. In moving forward with these projects, we are guided by our management team. This team, which has experienced a number of additions over the past year or two from both within the Memorial community and from external organizations, is committed to communicating with you about our projects and how they can impact and benefit you.

To keep you informed of our activities, this year we created our second annual report. In the spirit of sustainability, the report is available electronically in pdf format on our website. This year’s report, “Our Path” outlines activities that took place and priorities that guided us during the 2013-2014 fiscal year and focuses our activities as we move forward. As you will see in the document, while much work has been done, we are on a path of change and development. We have made it so far, but there is still a journey ahead of us. We recognize this and have developed a multi-year plan to meet our objectives and respond to your needs.

Advisory Services is one of the areas in which we are responding. Members of our management team are in the process of meeting with all deans and directors to get a snapshot of how this area is doing. Following these meetings, feedback will be reviewed to determine where any changes may be required to better address our clients’ needs.

The development and enhancement of the programs we offer across the institution has also been a priority for us. As a result, we have made a number of advances in Learning and Development (L&D). If you haven’t checked out our L&D programs lately, I suggest you visit our Learning and Development site. From management development programs to professional development opportunities and academic credit courses, there is something available for everyone.

This is a busy time of year at Memorial with classes in session and students getting ready for exams. People are already talking about the upcoming holiday season and making plans to celebrate with family and friends. As you are making your plans, I hope you find time to attend some of the functions that are being organized here at Memorial whether it is a departmental or faculty event or one of the larger university functions such as the Joy to the World Party for Memorial employees and retirees that is being held on Dec. 18 at 3 p.m. in the Breezeway or the traditional carol sing that is scheduled for the morning of Dec. 24 from 10 - 11:30 a.m. in the D.F. Cook Recital Hall on the St. John’s campus. In addition to these events, Memorial’s Marine Institute and Grenfell campuses are also planning various holiday functions. I encourage you to enjoy some of the events and help spread the holiday cheer!

Best Regards,

Stephen Dodge
Director of Human Resources
