Mention that you are a university student. Tell what your native language is and that you are learning German. You may provide more information if you like, such as your major area of study, any special interests, your age, etc. You may also request a German penpal in a certain area, such as music, computing science, business, engineering. They will try to meet your requests, although it is not always possible.

When you receive the name of a penpal, write a letter in English introducing yourself, and try a few sentences of German. Each time you write, you should write part of the letter in English so your partner can learn from your English, and part in German so your partner can correct your mistakes. This is learning in Tandem--you help each other.
