Awards
Two convocation awards are presented each year on the
recommendation of the Department of Geography:
- the President’s Gold Medal for Academic Excellence (Geography)
- the Canadian Association of Geographers (CAG) Award
In addition, undergraduate and graduate students in Geography can
apply for awards that are designed to encourage training in
particular areas of natural or social sciences, and geographic
information sciences.
The list below includes examples of awards that have been received
by former and current geography students from Memorial University.
- University Medal for Academic Excellence
(Geography)
University Medals for Academic Excellence are given in the graduating year to a candidate for Bachelor's degree who is recommended by the Head of the Department. - Canadian Association of Geographers (CAG) Award
The CAG Award is given to the top student graduating with an Honours degree majoring in Geography in each university in Canada. Recipients receive a one-year membership in the CAG, which includes a subscription of the Canadian Geographer, a professional journal. - Northern Scientific Training Awards
The Northern Scientific Training Awards are available to Canadian students to conduct research in northern Labrador or other areas of northern Canada, under the supervision of a faculty member. Graduate students or senior undergraduate students are eligible to receive this award.
