Welcome to the Department of Gender Studies at Memorial University!
We are an expanding department in the Faculty of Arts with faculty research and teaching interests in citizenship and human rights, reproductive rights, Irish studies, auto/biography and life writing, feminist theory, the body, environmental and Aboriginal studies, and postcolonial theory.
At the undergraduate level, students can complete a Major or Minor in Gender Studies. At the graduate level, we offer the Master of Gender Studies (MGS).
The Major in Gender Studies is a multi-disciplinary program for the degree of Bachelor of Arts. The Minor in Gender Studies is a multi-disciplinary program offered to candidates for the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science (Cooperative), Bachelor of Business Administration, and the physical education and recreation degrees offered by the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation. We offer a diverse range of courses. For current course offerings, please click here.
The undergraduate programs allow students to examine critically how gender shapes our identities, our social interactions and our world. Students are exposed to multiple theories and perspectives and encouraged to develop a framework for thinking about power relations connected to gender, race, class, sexuality, ability, age and nationality.
The Master of Gender Studies addresses the need for a deeper understanding of women and gender in society, and students may explore a range of topics, including but not limited to everyday experiences, social and political institutions, literary and philosophical contributions, and past and present events and issues. Students may also develop practical and policy initiatives that promote equality and social justice. The Master's degree can be completed by full- or part-time study and by thesis or non-thesis (project/internship) programs. Students may draw on the expertise of faculty members hailing from a range of academic disciplines and divisions. For more information about our alumnae, please see our most recent alumnae newsletter.
The Department of Gender Studies also hosts professional development workshops for graduate students and an annual Speakers' Series open to everyone.
