The Exchange Programme with the Lycee d'Etat in Saint-Pierre

Clock Tower

In addition to the Frecker Programme at the Francoforum, the department offers students the chance to participate in an exchange programme with the Lycée d'État (the secondary school) in Saint-Pierre. Thanks to an agreement between the government of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, up to four students each year can spend the academic year at the Lycée studying French. Students who complete this programme receive 18 unspecified credit hours in French at the third-year level (the equivalent of six semester courses). While spending a year in a high school may not seem like the most productive way to spend one's time, students who have taken part in this programme have almost always found it both challenging and extremely rewarding. The chance to spend an entire academic year in Saint-Pierre, living and working entirely in French, is bound to produce a huge improvement in your oral and written ability, and in your ability to function in a culture which is very different in a lot of fundamental ways from what you are used to.

Students who have taken part in the Frecker programme often make friends in Saint-Pierre, and find themselves wanting to return there. The Lycée programme provides a perfect opportunity for students to do just that. Substantial financial assistance is provided by the governement of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon to assist students with the cost of room and board; no tuition fees are charged students for attending the Lycée.

Students who wish to spend a year at the Lycée should have completed at least French 3100 or 3101, and must complete an application form available through the departmental office or on-line.

NOTE: This programme is available only to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador.
