The Childcare Centre at Memorial University’s St. John’s campus first opened in 1976. At that time it was located in Corte Real, which is a part of the Burton’s Pond Residence Complex.
The centre was the creation of Memorial student leaders with help from the university administration. It opened as a pre-school and had about 20 children.
The new building was officially opened in January 1992 with a capacity to accommadate 164 children in four individual licensed centres.
A long standing Board member, Dr. Carole Peterson recalls the struggles to plan and erect the Childcare Centre in this article. She captures how the key players really fought to make the Childcare Centre that we enjoy today happen.
The combined efforts of the Students' Union and Board members made the dream of building a first class childcare facility a reality.
In January 29, 2007 Campus Childcare celebrated a milestone with over 30 years of childcare excellence on the St. John's campus. We are proud of our accomplishments and look forward to making a difference in the lives of children for many more years.
