Jean Clottes is widely known for his research and management work at the spectacular cave of Chauvet-Pont d'Arc, the site of some of the earliest known European cave art, dating to 30,000-32,000y BP. Located in the Ardèche department of southern France, the site was the subject of the 2010 film Cave of Forgotten Dreams by the filmmaker Werner Herzog.

Jean Clottes is a prominent French prehistorian, former chairman of UNESCO’s International Committee of Rock Art and former president of the Société Préhistorique Française.
