March 2022: Making a difference

A university doesn't live in a vacuum. It takes partnerships, trust and a desire to make our world a better place.

This month, Memorial’s many successful partnerships and how together we’re making a difference, were demonstrated in two ways.

I was proud to write an article for Universities Canada about how Memorial is helping to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Life Below Water.

It was a wonderful opportunity to highlight our relationships with the people and organizations in the ocean sector.

More than 40 per cent of research at Memorial is ocean-related, and our network of academic, industry and public sector partners is critical to our success. Ocean science research at Memorial is a major contributor to the blue economy.

Just last week, we welcomed federal and provincial partners to our St. John’s campus to announce a new project to reduce our carbon footprint.

Funding from the Government of Canada and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador will enable the replacement of a fuel-fired steam boiler with two electric-powered steam boilers in Memorial’s utilities annex.

The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through this switch is equivalent to removing 6,200 cars off our roads. Every day, in ways large and small, Memorial is making a difference.

Two years at the helm

Today marks my second anniversary as president of Memorial, and I’m so proud of what Team Memorial has accomplished together. We’ve summed up a year of accomplishments in a video.

I hope as a supporter of Memorial, you’ll take a look and share in our pride.
