Research Description

My research is based in the Inuit community of Arviat, located on the
western coast of Hudson Bay, and will investigate landscape and coastal
hazards affecting the community and their impacts on community land use,
infrastructure and planning. The western Hudson Bay region is currently
facing a number of climatic and environmental changes including warmer
air and ground temperatures, permafrost degradation, loss of sea ice
cover, rapid isostatic rebound and resultant coastline emergence. This
is also an isolated region experiencing rapid population growth, an
infrastructure deficit and community expansion. The challenge of
identifying land that is potentially unstable due to permafrost
degradation, susceptible to flooding due to poor drainage and increased
precipitation, or unsuitable because of planning constraints demands new
knowledge on the nature and extent of local climate, and landscape and
coastal hazards.
