Associate Vice-President (Academic)
Dr. Grant Gardner
Dr. Gardner was
born in North Bay, Ontario, and obtained his B.Sc. (Honours) in
Marine Biology from Guelph, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Biological
Oceanography at UBC. In 1979, he came to Memorial University as a
tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Biology. Since
then, he has held a succession of increasingly responsible
administrative positions, including several terms as the Chair of
the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies, and appointments as
Acting Head of Biology and Acting Dean of Science. Prior to joining
the office of the Vice-President (Academic), he served almost 15
years as the Associate Dean of Science. During his academic
service, Dr. Gardner has been involved in a number of key
developments at Memorial University, including the institution of a
minimum entrance standard, development and construction of the
Bonne Bay Marine Station, and development of the Memorial Code.
Outside the University, Dr. Gardner is a founding fellow of the
Canadian Wildlife Federation Learning Institute. He has been active
in environmental education, and served as the Chair of the Canadian
Network for Environmental Education and Communication, of which he
was a founding member, for many years. He is currently the
President of the Coastal Zone Canada Association, and serves on the
National Expert Committee on Education for Sustainable Development,
the Board of the Atlantic Coastal Zone Information Steering
Committee, and the Strategic Planning and Finance Committees of
Sigma Xi. Dr. Gardner was also the Chair of the very successful
Coastal Zone conference held in St. John’s in 2004, and has
played an important role in the hosting of two Canada-Wide Science
Fairs here.
