In 2008, as a partnership between MUN HOPE and Youth Challenge
International, five Memorial University students were sent overseas
to Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Tanzania. The major goal of
this annual volunteer project was to build the skills, confidence
and experience of young people by involving them in substantive
overseas international development projects in partnerships with
local youth-serving non-governmental organizations. The project
helped to assist in the education of local Tanzanian youth on very
important health issues such as HIV/AIDS, nutrition practices,
water safety, etc. Students partnered with three non-governmental
organizations including, The Zanzibar Association for the Support
of Orphans (ZASO), The Zanzibar Nurses Association (ZANA) and the
UMATI, a group targeted at the education of young people through
drama, art, music etc. Highlights from the project include a huge
community outreach event as well as outreach events put off for the
UMATI group and the ZASO group. The experience was very beneficial
because it educated the students on how to interact in a different
environment and culture, how to deal with language barriers and
cultural differences, as well as learning to effectively put off
educational workshops.
