Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter
of Millennium Laureates

Date:March 25, 2008
Conference:Connections

The “Connections” conference was a day long leadership event opened to grade 11 and grade 12 students. The goal was to engage prospective post-secondary students in the exciting options, challenges and post-secondary decisions that await them. This was achieved through an interactive conference broken down into various break-out sessions of student’s choice. For example some choices were goal setting, scholarship information, decision making, youth programs, trades and colleges and student activism and engaged citizenship. There were six different workshops that touched on issues like volunteering, adjusting to college/university and going abroad.

There was a lot of positive feedback from participants at the end of the conference. One student said “I really enjoyed the conference today and I thought all aspects were really interesting”. And another student said, “It was helpful, not formal and intimidating like most conferences for student”.

The “Connections’ conference successfully opened prospective post-secondary students to the exciting choices that await them after high school. This successful event has offered the group “NL Chapter of Millennium Laureates” optimism and they hope to continue to offer the “Connections” conference annually.
